GAIOLA PARK

Crystal-clear sea, views of Vesuvius, and ancient Roman villas: the allure of Gaiola is undeniable.

The maritime park is a place where volcanological, biological, and archaeological elements blend, creating an iconic landscape.

It extends for 42 hectares from the village of Marechiaro to the Bay of Trentaremi. Sumptuous Roman villas were built along the coast starting in the 1st century BC, among the most famous being that of Pollione. The residence was called the Villa of Pausilypon, meaning "the place where sorrows end."

On the Posillipo hill, you can see openings that resemble caves. These are ancient tuff quarries.

The Gaiola lookout offers a unique view: you can admire the Sorrento peninsula, Capri, and, nearby, a 19th-century villa. Shrouded in mystery, the villa is now abandoned, and many legends surround it. Since 2002, Gaiola has been a marine protected area.
